GURU SHABDA TATTVA - MEANING OF WORD - GU-RU🔗

gu-kāraśca andhakāro hi ru-kārasteja ucyate | ajñānagṛāsakaṁ brahma gurureva na saṁśayaḥ || 44 ||

44. The letter 'Gu' denotes darkness (ignorance or ajñāna) and the letter 'ru' denotes light (tejas or jñāna). Brahman who is capable of swallowing up the ignorance is certainly the Guru, without a doubt.

gukāro bhavarogaḥ syāt rukārastan-nirodhkṛt | bhava-roga-haratvācch gururityabhidhīyate || 45 ||

45. 'gukāra' sound means the disease of birth and death. 'rukāra' sound means the destroyer of births and deaths. The one with the power of destroying the disease of birth and death (bhavaroga), is known by this significant name—'Guru'.
