Gene Expression: is the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. The process is used by all known life to generate the macromolecular machinery for life.

For example:

• Depending on environmental conditions, the common yeast undergoes a quantum shift in metabolic pathway from fermentation to oxidative metabolism, upon exhaustion of glucose as an energy source. This is called dioxy or double growth.
