Care for Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder in which the kidneys do not function optimally because they are damaged. This causes them to leak large quantities of protein from the blood into the urine (proteinuria at least 3.5 grams per day per 1.73m2 body surface area). It is common to have swelling (edema) as there is excess fluid in the body and low levels of protein in the blood (hypoalbuminemia), high cholesterol (hyperlipidaemia) and a predisposition for coagulation.
A group of capillary blood vessels called the glomerulus are responsible to filter fluid from your blood and extracting both needed substance (potassium, sodium & phosphorus) and waste products. The needed substances are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream and wastes excreted through urine. While Nephrotic syndrome is not a disease the signs and symptoms may point to future kidney problems.

Incontinence is a common and embarrassing problem that causes leakage of urine or fecal matter. Though incontinence is usually a treatable medical condition, many times it goes unreported thereby increasing the impact on one's quality of life. Urination is controlled by muscles, nerves, the brain and the spinal cord. A physical examination is recommended to look for a history of straining, discomfort, recent surgery or illness, poor reflexes or sensations, drug use, stool impaction, or tumors blocking urinary tract all of which might point to nerve-related cause. Often a test for bladder capacity or residual urine showing weakness in muscles is suggested.
The most common forms are stress incontinence which appears in women as a result of damage during childbirth or activities with increased abdominal pressure like coughing, lifting or sneezing. Urge incontinence results from contractions of detrusor muscles and insufficient warning which causes large leakage of urine. Athletic incontinence may develop with frequent high-impact activities. Exercise strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, bladder training or biofeedback is helpful to alleviate conditions.
Incontinence in children is known as enuresis and it usually stops by age 5. Incontinence affects older men over 40 more often, especially those with an enlarged prostate. Prostate cancer or the drugs used may also cause incontinence.
